At Heath Lane, all children with special educational needs access the same ambitious curriculum as everyone else. They feel safe, calm and accepted by our kind and inclusive community. With our support, they build long lasting relationships and the skills they need to lead rich, fulfilled lives.
Access to our curriculum
We integrate children with special needs into the nursery, while meeting their unique needs. Our staff adapt and adjust teaching so all children can access our ambitious curriculum.
Highly qualified practitioners
All practitioners at Heath Lane are inclusive and supportive of all children including those with identified SEND. We are all qualified in early years, engage with regular training on supporting children with SEND, and employ a range of strategies based on presenting need, this includes the use of Makaton. Roots Federation has two SEND Coordinators who give specialist guidance to children, staff and parents/carers.
Tailored curriculum support
Practitioners adapt teaching so children with special needs can access the curriculum. Children get bespoke resources to support their needs, and reasonable adjustments to aid their development. For children with more complex needs, we provide a more tailored curriculum, targeted sessions and time with our familiar adults.
Early Identification
Your child’s key person develops a close and trusting relationship with them, enabling us to understand how they learn and grow. Through ongoing observations and assessment, we can identify where a child may benefit from extra support and work alongside families to help them thrive.
Referrals to external professionals
When appropriate, we may work in partnership with a range of professionals who can offer additional advice and support to help your child thrive. We value close collaboration with families and, where a child is already receiving support or has an existing care plan, we will work together to follow agreed guidance and ensure a consistent approach to meeting their needs.
Collaboration with parents / carers
We value open communication and strong partnerships with parents/carers of children with SEND. Your child’s key person will keep you informed about their progress and experiences, with opportunities to connect through conversations, regular updates and termly ADPR meetings. You may also meet with our SEND Coordinator to discuss your child’s development and any support that may be beneficial. We believe parents are experts on their own children and will always work closely with you when considering additional support, developing a SEND support plan, or seeking advice from other professionals.
Support for wellbeing and relationships
Our nursery is a safe, caring place for all children including those with SEND. They build strong, positive relationships with children and adults. We cater to special dietary needs and offer a flexible wrap-around care service.
