Head of School's Message

We want to make sure all children have plenty of opportunities to stay hydrated throughout the nursery day.

Water is available throughout the day from the classroom tap and water dispenser. On warmer days, we also make sure water is readily available when children are learning and playing in the garden. Milk is available at snack time.

As part of our everyday routines, children are encouraged to develop independence around drinking and hydration. At lunchtime and in our After School Club, children are supported to pour their own water from a jug, helping them to build confidence and independence.

We have received an increasing number of requests from parents and carers for children to be able to bring their own water bottle to nursery. The Senior Leadership Team has reviewed this and, from now on, children may bring a water bottle if they wish to do so.

To help us keep this safe and manageable:

  • The bottle must contain water only.

  • It must be clearly labelled with your child’s name.

  • Please choose a lightweight bottle. Heavy or large water bottles can cause injury if dropped or thrown.

  • Children will continue to have access to nursery water throughout the day, so a water bottle is not essential.

Thank you for working with us to support healthy habits, independence and good hydration throughout the nursery day.

Language of the week

We are lucky to have a rich and diverse community with lots of different languages. Our language of the week is Tamil, which is spoken by some of our children and their families.

Please find below links of how to say "Hello" and "Goodbye" in Twi. You can practise with your child/ren at home.

Learning At Home

This week, our Learning at Home focus is all about helping your child build their independence by practising putting on their coat by themselves!

We have attached a video of Effie demonstrating the technique we teach at Nursery.

It might seem like a small task, but it's a big step for little hands and growing confidence. We know it can be a bit fiddly at first (zips and buttons can be tricky for anyone!), so we've attached a short video to show you a simple technique that makes it much easier for children to master.

Here's how you can help at home:

  • Practise regularly — a couple of times a day works best, even if it's just popping the coat on for a trip to the car or the park

  • Be patient and let them have a go before stepping in to help

  • Celebrate every attempt, even if it's not quite right yet — confidence grows with encouragement!

The more opportunities your child has to practise, the quicker they'll get the hang of it. Little and often really does make a difference, so do try to weave this into your daily routine over the coming week.

Healthy Me, Healthy World

A Healthy Start to the Day at Breakfast Club.

Breakfast Club is a great way for children to enjoy a healthy and relaxed start to their school day. We have spaces available, so if you are looking for a positive start to the morning, please email admin@heathlane.herts.sch.uk.

We offer a range of nutritious breakfast choices, including fresh fruit, natural yoghurt, toast and cereals such as wheat hoops, rice krispies and corn flakes. Children can choose what they would like to eat and are encouraged to develop their independence through a range of everyday self-help skills.

Breakfast Club is not just about eating breakfast – it is also an opportunity for children to practise important life skills. With adult support, children are encouraged to:

🍓 Choose and prepare their own fruit and breakfast items.
🍞 Spread their own choice of spread on toast.
🔪 Cut toast or fruit into smaller pieces when needed.
🥛 Pour their own milk or water from a jug.
🧼 Wash their hands before eating and help to wash fruit, bowls and cutlery.

These small routines help children build confidence, independence and responsibility, while developing skills they can use at home and throughout their lives.

Breakfast Club provides a calm, sociable environment where children can eat, chat and develop their self-help skills before joining their friends for the nursery day.

Success Story of the Week

This week, the children have been enjoying exploring a wonderful selection of new books and discovering the joy that stories can bring.

Through sharing stories together, looking closely at illustrations, talking about characters and making predictions, the children are developing their language, communication and early literacy skills.

We are seeing a growing enthusiasm for choosing books, listening to stories and talking about what they have read. It has been lovely to see the children becoming more confident in sharing their ideas, joining in with familiar stories and developing a real love of books and reading.

All absences must be reported daily either by leaving an absence voice message or emailing  admin@heathlane.herts.sch.uk.

We politely ask that if you plan to take your child out during school time, you notify the Nursery office. For appointments, we ask where possible that these are not during the school day. If this is not avoidable, please kindly share the relevant information for this appointment in order for us to be able to authorise this.

Regular attendance at Nursery is very important, as it helps children build the foundational knowledge and skills they will need as they move through school. Establishing good attendance habits now supports a smoother transition into primary school and helps ensure children develop positive routines that will benefit them throughout their educational journey. Thank you for your continued support in helping your child attend regularly and on time.
