Head of School's Message

Welcome back!

I hope you all had a restful Easter break and are feeling recharged for the final stretch of the term.  The INSET day, held just before the holiday, gave our staff dedicated time to explore creative ways to weave environmental themes through our curriculum. From science to art and literacy, teachers have already started planning projects that connect classroom learning with real‑world green initiatives. As we return to school, our focus remains on developing sustainability.

Our new wormery is up and running, and the children are beginning to observe how compost breakdown and learning first-hand how these little helpers turn scraps into rich soil. Children have designed upcycled sculptures using recycled materials. Our garden is growing and together children and staff are caringly tending the soil.

On the first day back, to celebrate Earth Day, we were honoured to host the Dacorum Mayor. The children sang this week’s rhyme, ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle’. We gave the Mayor a tour of our nursery and shared our first steps to becoming more sustainable. She was very impressed by what she saw!

Thank you for your continued partnership in making our school a place where sustainability isn’t just a lesson but a way of life. Together, we’re growing learners who care for our planet—one worm at a time!

Dates coming up:

Electric Umbrella - Friday 2nd May (1.40-2.30pm) - if your child doesn't normally attend on a Friday afternoon and you would like to bring them along and accompany them, please email the office and let them know. Please note that there are no parking facilities on site.

Reminders:

Now that the weather is getting warmer - it is imperative that every child has sun lotion applied before their session. They must also have a sun hat (labelled with their name) with them every day - even if the day starts a little cloudy.

Book & Rhyme of the week

Our next Talk for Writing Book is "We're Going on a Bear Hunt" by Michael Rosen.

The story will move into the immersion phase of the EYFS Talk For Writing programme, where children will explore the story through various engaging activities. These will include building a bear cave with different materials, going on hunts using a map and an interview with the bear!. This phase is crucial for developing understanding and language skills.

Our key vocabulary of the text is "Deep", "Googly", "Gloomy", "Wavy", "Oozy" and "Narrow". Please see below link to the story;

Language of the week

We are lucky to have a rich and diverse community with lots of different languages. Our language of the week is Sinhala, which is spoken by one of our pupils, and their family. Please find below links of how to say "Hello" and "Goodbye" in Sinhala. Please practise with your child at home.

Learning At Home

The children have been learning a catchy song all about looking after our planet: ''Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!''

Ask your child to sing it for you at home- they've been joining in brilliantly!

You can also encourage them to show you the Makaton signs they've learned for plastic, paper, glass and tin.

Success Story of the Week

The summer term started with a wonderful visit from The  Mayor of Dacorum, Brenda Link, in celebration of Earth Day! It was fabulous to be able to share the work that we have been doing at Nursery regarding our commitment to environmental awareness and sustainability.

Highlights of which include...planting vegetables, litter picking, care of the school snail "Connie", a new wormery set up by the children which will be used to recycle natural waste. The children treated The Mayor to a special rendition of their rhyme of the week,  “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle”.

Look out for an article in the local press in coming weeks.
